Who remembers Ants on a Log? That question was purely rhetorical, but you can answer if you really want to. It was one of my favourite snacks in preschool and daycare. Celery filled with cheese whiz or peanut butter and raisins (ants) evenly distributed by sticking them on the celery filling. My mom always made them when it was her turn to bring the snack for preschool/baseball team/whatever because it was "healthy". For those of you who were curious they are every bit as good as they used to be.

People who are fairly decent artists draw Spock again and again badly.

Also I just found out that my favourite author (Neil Gaiman) placed an award winning shortstory of his up online to read. So I'm going to go do that now. It's called How To Talk To Girls At Parties, but aside from that I know nothing about it. It's the Top 25 stories that never really made it into the mainstream media due to a inexplicable desire not to report on them.
Things have been a little busy lately so I haven't really kept people informed of what's been going on in my life.

I am definitely going to Ethiopia now as an IT Trainer at a Teacher's College in a city called Adewa. I'm working out what I should pack right now. I really have only a slight idea what I should bring since I can only take about one large suitcase full with me. It's hard to prioritize these things. Jess advised I pack lots of underwear which seems sound advice.

I will be having a going away get together and seeing as I could be leaving on any day between the 11th and the 14th I'm going to ask that people put aside the 9th for an as yet undetermined get together in a restaurant followed by a bar. If I end up being in town for a few days after that I'll just pretend I don't know anyone I've already said goodbye, too.

Speaking of my leaving Sarah, will be subletting my room while I'm gone so if you're missing me, just pretend she's me. There'll be some of my clothes in storage that you can make her wear and then you can make her only talk about music and computers.

Anyhow I'll try my best to keep everyone in the loop about my going away get together.

Jordie

In a snowy governmental resort

So I only had a very brief stay in Montreal. And yes Quinn I did have poutine while I was there in a bar with real cheese curds. They were disappointing, so I guess I just don`t get it.

After an afternoon in Montreal which was freezing we quickly moved on to Orford where we are having a government training course. It`s really fun, but most of the people in the training course with me are francophone, so while it`s not hard to communicate with any of them one-on-one whenever they are in groups they quickly fall instinctively into French. There`s about 25 of us in all and most of them are from Montreal and have been training together for a couple months so it`s like falling into a really boisterous group of friends. The language barrier alone though makes socializing more difficult than I`d like, but on the other hand it`s probably easing me into what I should expect when I`m in Ethiopia*.

The bar at this centre was advertised to have reasonably priced drinks so I was a little disappointed to find $5 drinks, until upon further research I discovered that that was the universal price for any drink, this included the Cutty Sark, which I greatly appreciated. In addition to that the bartender poured everything as a double,* making her probably my favouritest bartender ever. I had three of these, which was more than enough to do me in. I ended up serenading my neighbours with the Magnetic Fields in a drunken slurred voice while putting off going to bed doing this for about a dozen songs. They haven`t complained about it yet, but I`m terribly embarassed that I may have kept someone up. The Magnetic Fields have rapidly become my soundtrack for this trip and at the moment I`m not really listening to much beyond that.

I`ve had my plans changed a few times as to where my placement will be which is driving me batty, but the absolute latest I will be going will be February 14th (Valentine`s Day on a plane). Currently I`ll be going to Ethiopia, which wasn`t my first choice, but I`m still really excited.

*Ethiopia still isn`t confirmed, but it`s that or nothing.

*Sometimes a triple.

So I recently got accepted to an overseas internship helping the developing world set up their internet infrastructure through a volunteer organization called VSO. I will likely be in Africa sometime in the near future doing just that. Right now though I am in our nations capitol and in a couple days I'll be in Quebec for training.

Right now though I'm starving because my plane in Toronto got cancelled and then delayed so I am extra late right now. Also I have to work on a feature for Streethawk while I'm travelling and some Discorder reviews. So I should go try and find someplace that's still serving food. It's delicious.

Make in a mug.

1 shot of orange flavoured brandy
Add water until the mug is about a third full.
Nutmeg
Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon of sugar
Stir together

Fill with cheapass red wine

Microwave, but do so at a low heat and make sure it doesn't boil.

Jordie out

link dump:
-so true craigslist
-book of analogies on copyright law greg london
-locksport MAKE
-anyone who hasn't read transmet should download issue #1 Vertigo Comics
-the flying lizards - money youtube
-commentary on 60s women's magazine's culture of despair A Hole in the Head
-UCLA student tasered for not having a library card Daily Bruin
-smart op-ed on australian copyright law the age
-piece on why the zune is idiotic chicago sun-times
-wil wheaton's amusing summary of open water vox

Snow! And Christmas! And free concerts!

Today is a day of cleaning. Yesterday was a day of concerts... free ones! I saw the Rolling Stones while working yesterday and they were appropriately epic and enjoyable except the sound quality at BC Place sucks. Then I went to the CiTR Fun Raiser which was free for DJs like moi. Today I have decided that the Christmas season has officially started on account of the snow and the fact that I've decided it's a day for hot alcohol. Also I listened to Sufjan's Christmas album earlier today. I'm going to try my hand at mulled wine later this evening. Then maybe watch Seven Samurai. Haven't decided yet. The landlords kids made a snowman and when no one was looking I added a top hat. So it's a pretty sweet snowman.

Jordie out

I just finished archiving my digital music collection so I never have to worry about it being lost. While doing this I titled each DVD by first artist on it to last artist on it, and I thought it provided a nice slice of my musical tastes. So I've decided to record it for posterity:

DVD 1: !!! to Bright Eyes
DVD 2: British Sea Power to Destroyer
DVD 3: Devo to Hank Ballard and the Midnighters
DVD 4: Hank Pine & Lily Fawn to Luna
DVD 5: Lyrics Born to New Buffalo
DVD 6: New York Dolls to Rogue Wave
DVD 7: Roots Manuva to Tender Trap
(Note: My "the" section is sorted seperately from the "non-the" section)
DVD 8: The Advantage to The Kleptones
DVD 9: The Knife to The Velvet Underground
DVD 10: The Walkmen to Yeah Yeah Yeahs
CD 1: Yo La Tengo to the Winston Giles Orchestra unsorted mp3 file

Jordie out

My monitor and with it the speakers in my monitor broke yesterday, which means I couldn't use my computer for a day until I borrowed Alasdair's monitor and I still can't listen to music without headphones. Boo. I'm however getting myself a free new (to me) monitor on Monday I guess I'll have to buy myself some speakers though.

Sad Jordie

-libraries are hot the nonist
-US congress looks into taxing virtual worlds reuters
-good piece on how gay tv works towards making same sex marriage safer pop matters
-this article on the fat tax debate should have been titled margerinal utility, but apparently they don't like the puns pop matters
-on the general shittiness of the quality of the No Fly List 60 minutes
